Philip Taaffe, whose first solo exhibition took place in 1982, belongs to a generation of artists who in the eighties succeeded in restoring credibility to abstraction after the suicide of sorts it suffered under the theorising of Minimalism, with its drive to reduce painting to a mere index of formal characteristics.
